Spokane Library 2.0

The exercises we have been doing have for the most part been fun. Most of the sites visited I have used in the past, although maybe in a slightly different form.

It has been fun finding new tools that makes connecting to others fun and exciting. I do wish the security system would have allowed us access to some of the sites in the later exercises, but I do understand the reasons why they did not.

I can definitely see ways to make projects that take collaboration easier to do in the future. I also think that there are some ideas that can be expanded on to present to the public to make them think of the library as a progressive learning institute.

I think the best of part the exercise for me was having co-workers help me through some of the exercises. Sharing time learning together is always nice. It makes everyone feel good when they can contribute to the learning process

Audiobooks

I listened to some of the shorter poems and noveletts on LibriVox. It was a nice experience and I will I had more time to explore this format.

I do not usually listen to audio books because I like skip through the pages that have to much description. This is not really possible in an audio book.

Podcasts

I again tried this morning to listen to a podcast here at the library. Because of the way it loads, I had to try the public internet stations. All of the podcasts I tried required the use of ActiveX and do to security reasons the computers do not allow it.

This is something I might try if and when I get high speed internet at home.

Generators

I found a snowflake generator that I thought was appropriate for this time of year. It allows you to view it as a still, in 2D and in 3D formats. The link is on the right side of my blog page.

If you do not see it try this link: http://www.zefrank.com/snowflake/

Discovering Web Tools

I actually visited multiple sites tha were on the list of Web 2.0 awards. Some of my favorite sites were Craigslist, Widgets, LibraryThing, Cocktail Builder, and maps.google.com. Some of the sites I have been familiar with as I use them at work and at home, they are Craiglist, LibraryThing and Maps.google.com.

I have even had my husband, who hates surfing the net, ask how to get to Craigslist and maps.google. He has been able to navigate the site with no help from me which tells me the creators did a great job.

Zoho Writer

This is a test of the word processing features of Zoho Writer. From what I have seen on this site it would be a great way to collaborate on a project with other co-workers. When having to write a proposal or presentation, it could quickly and easily be revised with all involved having immediate access. The writers of the project can access from outside of the work place so even when traveling or from home they can work on it.

I can also see where those of us that keep in touch with family via email could work on say a family reunion or other gathering without having to resort to emailing revisions back and forth.

I do wish it came with some stationery so it could be used for Christmas letters, birth announcements and other occasions.

Library 2.0

After reading what the Library 2.0 in Wikipedia had to say, I had to agree that it is a more powerful way to cooperate. As library employees read about, think about and add to ideas of how to serve their communities, the communities benefit from ideas that may be radical to their location. This in turn allows the communities to request services that will broaden and enrich their people in a more timely manner.

Technoriati

I found this site easy to use. After typing in Learning 2.0 I was surprised to see it used in blogs that had nothing to do with the exercises we were doing. I was able to narrow the search down to see what I expected and it was not that hard.

I would think this would be great for people that like using blogging to network with co-workers and others in their field. It would also be interesting to see if it could broaden areas for students.

Del.icio.us

I was to a workshop where I first heard about this site. After checking it out more closely for this exercise, I can see why it is a favorite with some of my co workers. It seems like a wonderful site especially if you like to blog about what is happening. You can just type in a tag word and up pops options of what others have found or added.

This will not be a site I use in the near future but might use later.

Rollyo

I set up an account at Rollyo and make up some search engines. I find this site to be useful since I often have to search each of the sites one by one.

It would be nice when working with specialized searches to be able to put in one search and have all the sites be searched at the same time.

Librarything

I have had an account with LibraryThing for about 6 months. I have it set to private so do not wish to link to the site. I use it to remind me about authors and titles that I have enjoyed.

RSS

I have been trying to work through the RSS technology. While I understand what they are and how they work, I am still trying to figure out what I need to do to connect them to my blog. I can add them as a web site but that is not what I would like to do with them. So far the ones I have added came from the MSN RSS site. I hope to have time this week to check out some of the other sites.I will probably ask one of my Co workers how they did it since some of them are very good at working through the steps.

I do have on my home computer some of the smaller RSS feeds that are from CNN and other news stations. Those were just a push of a button.

Some of the ones I like to use daily are the gasoline prices, temperature for different cities and of course the top news and sports sites.

Using New Technology

I have discovered through this exercise Flickr. I have a feeling that this will be the new way I can share photos with family and friends. We usually justed emailed them and I had to resend them over and over since I am still using dial up at home. With Flickr I will be able to just send them a message so they can check out my new pictures.

Trying Something New

This is the first time I have ever tried to create a blog. This should be a fun exercise in learning new forms of communication.
